The Work of the Church

Cabinet

The Cabinet is CBC's governing body.

Between the quarterly congregational meetings, these monthly Cabinet gatherings take place in members' homes.  Nine church officers, three pastors, and eight board committee chairs oversee all aspects of church life.

Cabinet meets on the second Wednesday of each month - beginning with a time of spiritual sharing.  Meetings  include a monthly reports from the CBC Treasurer, the Pastors, and each Board. In addition, policies and actions needing board discussion and/or approval are placed on the agenda.

Christian Education

Christian Education for all members, from infant to adult, is the mission of this board.

Under this large and inclusive umbrella, the work of the board centers on recruiting Learning Community class leaders, supervising to ensure classes run well, and planning special events on the church calendar.  Examples include activities during Advent and Lent. Our active youth progam is directed by this board -- which also encourages every member of our congregation, as well as our friends and guests, to attend conferences and camps which may serve to deepen spiritual life.

Communal Life

The Board provides leadership for the spiritual and communal welfare of the congregation.

Members of CBC's Board of Communal Life share a host of responsibilities for church activities throughout the year. They serve the life of the church by organizing, planning, hosting, and delegating helpers, servers and others for meals to ill members and their families.  This board also facilitates receptions for memorial services; children's dedication services; dinners for new members; Sunday morning continental breakfast; Christmas caroling for shut-ins and those who cannot regularly attend church; congregational dinners; the Giving of the Greens at Advent, and many other activities.

Leader Development

The Board of Leader Development taps the human resources of the church for service on the various boards, as well as The Cabinet.

The Board nominates church members to serve according to their gifts and abilities, providing the boards with ready talent to further the work of CBC within the church and onward to the outiside world.  Leadership Development also surveys the church’s members regarding their availability and interest to serve -- and finds replacements when board members must terminate their appointments.

Outreach

The Board of Outreach initiates, supports, and oversees CBC's outreach ministries.

The Board maintains contact with mission groups such as CBC Concerned, Undoing Racism Group, Ecology Mission Group, the Interfaith Hospitality Network (IHN), and Senior Service/Support Corps. Board of Outreach supports their ministries, as well as encourages individual spiritual undertakings that have the potential to develop into mission groups.  In addition, the Board educates the congregation regarding organizations worthy of receiving the monthly communion offering, proposes the budget for financial outreach, and administers the Fellowship Fund.

Pastoral Relations Committee

The Pastoral Relations Committee's role is to strengthen the mutual relationship between the congregation and its pastors.

To this end, the committee explores the roles of the pastors, provides support to them as human beings, channels reactions of the congregation to the pastors, and provides counseling in regard to their continuing education.   Pastoral Relations also conducts annual performance reviews and recommends compensation, benefits, and professional expenses. If a conflict arises involving a pastor and other staff or the congregation, the Committee seeks to bring reconciliation.

Properties

The Board of Properties works with the Church Facilities Manager to provide for the care and maintenance of our church.  Similar to what in many churches is called "Trustees,"  the Board of Properties is responsible for creating and maintaining facilities that accommodate and promote the activities and mission of the church.

In addition to maintaining facilities for worship, social, outreach, and educational programs of the church, Properties also cares for a major wing of the main building which houses the Central Nursery School, as well as for an adjacent, older facility called the Mission House.  This three-story building houses the Women's Resource Center and an apartment that provides living space for people with special short-term needs, such as missionaries on leave.

The core of CBC's physical plant is over 100 years old.  As with any older building, just keeping the building in usable and safe condition is an ongoing challenge.  In 2006, the congregation embarked on a very successful major capital campaign to bring into reality our vision for renewing our physical property in order to enhance our ministries and mission.  Learn more about this project at Building Inviting Spaces.

Stewardship

The Board of Stewardship leads campaigns for the giving of monetary and human talents.

This Board focuses on encouraging the congregation to be responsible and faithful stewards of community resources by giving  time, money, and personal abilities to accomplish CBC goals and mission. Additional responsibilities include: coordinate stewardship education, develop the annual stewardship campaign, promote deferred giving (wills and estates), account and record all church offerings, conduct any special fund campaigns, and provide income projections for future budget processes.

Worship

Board of Worship plans and evaluates the worship of the church.

Their primary focus is to plan and evaluate worship so the spiritual lives of those who attend our services are fed. Board of Worship evaluates each series upon its completion with this focus in mind.  Members of the Board take turns serving on worship series committees. In addition, this group deals with policy issues in the music ministry for CBC children and adults, as well as providing Audio Tapes/CD's/Web Streaming of each service for shut-ins and others.
