The CBC Senior Service and Support Corps offers support and advocacy for senior citizens in the church and society. This group is made up of mentally and physically active senior citizens who are retired and over the age of 55. The group meets monthly at the home of one of the members for a program and lunch, to share updates and information, and to plan service projects and retreats.

The SSSC members make a conscious effort to continue individual and group growth. We plan and conduct an annual retreat, always with a growth or service theme.  We enthusiastically participate in Elderhostels, sharing our experiences and learnings with other members of the group.  We share our recommendations for books, movies, and other cultural activities of interest.  We support each other through life changes common to all of us.

The 25+ members of the SSSC share vigorously in the life and missions of CBC:

 Individually, in our CBC community:

  • Teaching and helping in children’s activities and the Adult Learning Community.
  • Regular sharing as greeters, ushers, and counters of the weekly offering.
  • Participating in the choir and other musical events of the church
  • Serving on church boards and committees
  • Participating in the various church mission groups
  • Providing pastoral ministry to shut-ins
  • Participating in the preparation for and hosting of our Interfaith Hospitality Network guests
  • Managing the CBC archives

Individually, in the wider community:

  • Reading for the blind
  • Repairing tape recorders for the blind
  • Offering handyman and software service through the Surrey Services organization
  • Providing leadership and doing volunteer work in various retirement communities
  • Volunteering in public schools, Longwood Gardens and at the American Baptist Historical Society
  • Working on Habitat for Humanity projects

And, collectively:

  • Preparing and serving an annual dinner for former patients of Norristown State Hospital through the Forteniters Club
  • Delivering donated foodstuffs and staples to the Valley Forge ReAct food baank
  • Doing needed building repairs, maintenance, and cleanup, plus updating records, filing, and supplies storage at the church’s annual Putter Day
  • Supporting Surrey Services mailings
  • Contributing financially to various church mission activities

Since we first organized in 1988, we have been active in a wide variety of projects.

  • A team of about twelve drivers ferried a visiting choir from Zaire up and down the Eastern seaboard and into the Midwest in 1989
  • A team of eight went with a medical mission to Jamaica in1991
  • Teams went to the Green Lake Baptist Conference Center in 1997 and 1999, for work projects
  • One member shared in a work project at a Baptist seminary in Prague in 1998
  • We supported three work projects at the Church World Service Center in Maryland
  • We provided volunteers to manage and staff The Crafts of Freedom Shop, CBC’s non-profit store for 3rd World country crafts and products
  • We presented a program on Living Wills for CBC members
  • We planned and led a worship service to affirm aging as part of God’s plan and to combat negative stereotypes about aging
  • We supported The Other Side magazine with preparation of solicitation mailings
  • We volunteered our services processing and preparing for sale 3rd World crafts and products at the 10,000 Villages warehouse once a month in Lancaster County
