WAYNE -- “You Asked For It” is the unconventional theme of summer sermons at Central Baptist, as the pastors take up topics or scriptural passages suggested by the congregation. June 7 is the final Sunday for worship at 10:45 AM. Summer worship hour at 9:30 AM begins on June 14.
Graduates and Christian Education teachers will be recognized in the June 7 worship. In addition, a new communion set donated anonymously will be dedicated.
June 7 will be the final Sunday for Learning Community Classes for all ages until September. Two adult classes meet that day at 9:30 AM. About the first class, "Overcoming the E-Word: Can We Recover a Healthy Notion of Evangelism?" Pastor Tom Beers says the following: "Many people are uncomfortable with evangelism, because they associate the word with proselytizing, hard-sell, and/or close-minded disrespect for different ways of thinking. Is there any way we can recover a healthy understanding of evangelism that fits with our understanding of God and human beings, and which perhaps even excites our passion?"
In the second adult class, “Resisting Anti-Judaism in Biblical Interpretation and Christian Practice,” the special guest will be Dr. Ruth Sandberg, who is the Leonard and Ethel Landau Professor of Rabbinics at Gratz College.
After worship on June 14, a congregational meeting includes an update about the pastoral search process.
The “Betweeners” adult group will be camping at Belleplain State Park over the weekend of June 19-21.
On Sunday, June 28, two events are scheduled. A free showing of “Under Our Skin,” a documentary about Lyme Disease, will be shown at 11:15 AM. A light lunch will be served at 11 AM, immediately after morning worship. After the film, Dr. Domenick Braccia, a “Lyme-literate” physician, will conduct a Q&A discussion. See www.underourskin.com.
At 5:30 that afternoon, CBC Peacemakers hosts its Interfaith Peace Meal and Vigil.
From June 26-28, several members of CBC will travel to Pasadena, California, for the Biennial Conference of American Baptist Churches.
Also during the month of June, CBC will follow members arriving from and traveling abroad. Tessa Bailey, 16, is in Santa Ana, El Salvador, as an exchange student over the summer. She is living with a family active in CBC’s partner church in Santa Ana. In addition, CBC members Adalia and Ray Schellinger-Gutierrez will be returning to this area from Mexico, where they serve as medical missionaries. They will settle in the CBC Mission House, next door to the church, with their two teenage daughters for a year-long sabbatical.
The public is cordially invited to all activities. For more information, call the church office at 610 688 0664
